Gang Li, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Innovation Research

Overview

Dr. Gang Li is an Assistant Professor in the Michael W. Hall School of Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State University, where he advances research in artificial intelligence for energy resiliency and sustainability, renewable energy technologies, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and advanced vibration and control theory.

He is a recipient of the NSF EPSCoR Research Fellow Award and the DOE EnergyTech UP Faculty Explorer Award, with research funded by the NSF, DOE, VentureWell, the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute, Maryland Technology Development Corporation, Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Research Challenge Program, General Electric (GE), and Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).

Initiatives and Impact

Green Energy Technologies Research

  • AI for Energy Infrastructure Resiliency – accelerating AI-augmented algorithms to strengthen critical energy systems.

  • Predictive Maintenance & Condition Monitoring – developing physics-informed neural networks and large language models to enable early fault detection, reduce downtime, and cut costs.

  • Advanced Vibration & Control Theory – creating feedback and control systems to suppress mechanical vibrations and optimize performance in rotating machinery and energy harvesting.

He has also served as a technical lead in NSF I-Corps commercialization programs, bridging energy innovation with entrepreneurship. Dr. Li is a member of ASME, IEEE, and SAE International, an Early Career Editorial Board Member for Results in Engineering and the Journal of Dynamics and Control, and a conference chair for major events including the ASME International Conference on Energy Sustainability, ASME IMECE, and the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Resilience Governance of Infrastructure (AIRGI).
